The Monk (Bhikkhu Vagga)
Verse 360
Pāli Source
Cakkhunā saṃvaro sādhu, sādhu sotena saṃvaro; ghāṇena saṃvaro sādhu, sādhu jivhāya saṃvaro.
English Translation
Restraint through the eye is good; good is restraint through the ear. Restraint through the nose is good; good is restraint through the tongue.
Way to Enlightenment draft translation — not yet reviewed for accuracy.
Editorial Note
From the Bhikkhu Vagga (The Monk) — part of a longer sequence on sense restraint; this excerpt covers the first four of the six sense-doors named in the fuller passage (eye, ear, nose, tongue — body and mind continue in the verses that follow, not included in this sample).
